Substation Civils Contractor: NERS Accredited for Civils Works & Cable Laying from LV to 132kV

LMC Utilities delivers substation civils for new builds, upgrades, and extensions across the UK. NERS accredited from LV to 132kV, with a National Grid Competent Person on site, we provide the full civil scope, from ground preparation and plinth construction through to HV cable routes, ducting, and reinstatement.

Substation civils is the core of what LMC Utilities does. It is also where the industry’s problems with poor supervision and under-qualified labour are most visible. LMC Utilities was built specifically to address that, delivering the quality and site discipline that DNO contractors, ICPs, and principal contractors need from a civils sub-tier partner.

DNO authorisations & operational competence

LMC Utilities holds NERS accreditation (issued by LRQA) for civil works and cable laying across LV, 11kV, 20kV, 33kV, 66kV, and 132kV. This covers the majority of distribution-level substation work undertaken for DNOs and ICPs across the UK, and is the standard pre-qualification requirement for civils sub-contractors in this sector.

Additionally, Danny Phillips holds a National Grid Electricity Distribution Competent Person authorisation, SSAC and SDMP(b), permitting him to access NGED substations and sign on to Safety Documents as part of a working party. This is an uncommon credential at sub-tier level and gives LMC Utilities a practical advantage on live NGED sites and framework programmes.

Achilles UVDB registration

LMC Utilities holds Achilles UVDB accreditation and achieved a 100% score across all eight audit modules covering Health & Safety, Environment, Quality and Sustainability. This demonstrates our commitment to delivering power infrastructure projects safely, professionally and to the highest industry standards,

Who we work with

LMC Utilities works directly with ICPs and DNO contractors as the specialist civils sub-tier on contestable works packages and DNO infrastructure projects. Contestable works, where an ICP manages new connection delivery outside of the DNO directly, represent a significant part of LMC Utilities’ substation workload. LMC Utilities also works with principal contractors delivering substation civils for renewable energy developers, retail and commercial clients, and public sector bodies requiring grid upgrades or new power connections.

A National Grid Electricity Distribution Competent Person authorisation confirms that the individual has been assessed and approved to access NGED substations (SSAC) and sign on to Safety Documents as part of a working or test party (SDMP(b)). Danny Phillips holds this authorisation, valid to 2030. It is a mandatory access control for work on live NGED assets and is not commonly held at sub-tier civils level.

Typical LMC Utilities substation civils projects run from three to six weeks for standard new builds, up to three to twelve months for larger or more complex substations. Programme requirements are discussed at enquiry stage
